Cool Season Ornamentals

Some cool season ornamentals bloom in the winter while others grow slowly then explode into flower for fabulous spring blooms. Plant in Sept–Oct for beautiful bouquets in a few months.


Agrostemma Mixed Agrostemma githago
Delicate, satiny flowers in lavender-rose, shell pink, and white. Tall slender stems and grassy foliage. Beautiful as cut flowers. 3–4' tall. Plant 8–10" apart.

Clarkia ‘Mountain Garland’ Clarkia elegans
Easy to grow native wildflowers. Multiple flower stems are covered with small, ruffled blossoms in soft shades of coral, salmon, rose-pink, lilac, and white. Reseeds readily. 2–3' tall. Plant 6" apart.

Salvia mellifera ‘Shirley's Creeper’
Makes a tall, dense mound. White flowers in spring contrast against dark foliage. Evergreen perennial, Full/part sun, No/low water. 4–6' tall x 4–6' wide

Salvia mexicana ‘Limelight’
Dramatic violet-blue flowers with lime-green calyces. Cut back hard in winter for bushier appearance. Evergreen perennial, Full/part sun, Average water. 6' tall by 2–3' wide

Salvia microphylla ‘Berzerkeley’
Bright pink flowers bloom spring through fall. Attracts bees & hummingbirds. Evergreen perennial, Full sun, No/low water. 1–2' tall x 2–3' wide
